About Us

Don Nelson is a retired NBA Hall of Fame basketball coach and player.  Joy Nelson loves to paddle outrigger canoes and may take you along.

We went to Maui on our honeymoon and fell in love with the island.  We lovingly built the home in Kihei on the south side and lived there off and on for 15 years while working.  Now that we are retired we live on the north shore in Paia, next door to the rental cottages.  We love sharing the tropical beauty and ambiance of Maui with others.

Why you should book one of these pieces of paradise?  The views are incredible, on both sides of the island.  Maui has been named the best island in the world many times by Conde’ Nast. You will enjoy your privacy, while being able to walk to nearby shops and restaurants.

Hemp House

We are proud to have built the first homes in Hawaii made of “hemp-crete”, an age-old, building/manufacturing material that is derived from a distant cousin of the “cannabis sativa” plant species we all know as marijuana, though with only a negligible amount of tetrahydrocannabinol-the psychoactive chemical credited for the marijuana high. This material was actually used for centuries to manufacture everything from the rope used on US Navy ships to uniforms and countless other consumer products, until banned by the US government (under pressure from the petro-chemical giants) in the 1940’s. Today hemp-crete is proving itself to be an easily produced, environmentally-friendly alternative to many other building materials, and it is actually proven to be a better insulator against heat and cold than conventional products. When US farmers are allowed to grow industrial hemp it will also be cost-effective. We are hoping that our hemp-crete home proves to be a model for better, safer, cheaper and more environmentally-friendly building materials in the years to come.
